Browns Point Real Estate Information
Browns Point began its relatively short but still eventful history in the middle of the nineteenth century, at about the same time that the greater Tacoma area and much of Washington State were being colonized in earnest. In a sense, the history of Browns Point stretches back to the Wilkes Expedition, when a number of clipper ships and other sailing vessels explored much of the Pacific Northwest. In fact, Browns Point was originally named Point Harris after a sail maker, Alvin Harris, who was a part of the Wilkes Expedition. Browns Point garnered its current name from an early settler of the region who bore the last name Brown. Although Browns Point is technically a census designated place without central representation or governmental recognition, the community still boasts a considerable amount of civic pride and a good number of improvement organizations.
Foremost among these is the Browns Point Improvement Club, a roughly seventy year old consortium that holds the annual Browns Point Salmon Bake, a regionally famous and noteworthy event. The group was founded by Jerry Meeker, one of the early landowners of Browns Point, and has been run continuously ever since its inception. The most notable historic site in Browns Point is the Browns Point Lighthouse, which was built over a hundred years ago and remains a popular scenic and tourist destination. Other noteworthy attractions in the general area of Browns Point include the North Shore Golf Course for golfing enthusiasts, Crescent Heights Park, and the Northeast Tacoma Playground.
One important distinction that must be made is between the “real” Browns Point and the adjacent Tacoma neighborhood that is known locally by the same name. Although they are geographically close, the census designated place known as Browns Point is not a part of the city of Tacoma. Educational opportunities in and around Browns Point are offered by public and private institutions including the Seabury School, Meeker Middle School, Green Gables Elementary School, Sherman Elementary School, and Olympic View Christian Preschool. Some interesting recreational facilities in the Browns Point area include Browns Point Lighthouse Park and Point Defiance Park.
