McChord Real Estate Information

McChord Air Force Base is one of three major military districts situated in the metropolitan areas of Tacoma and Seattle in Washington State. McChord Air Force Base takes its name from a Colonel William McChord, who was the Chief of Training and Operations Division in the Army Air Corps. McChord is also the name of a census designated place that encompasses much of the eponymous Air Force Base. McChord (the census designated place) has a population of roughly four thousand one hundred residents, substantially less than the other two large military bases in the region (one being National Guard and the other being Army). McChord Air Force Base also contains a location recorded on the US National Register of Historic Places, the McChord Field Historic District, which was inducted into the Register less than two years ago.

McChord Air Force Base is primarily dedicated to military airlift, placing it under the authority of Air Mobility Command. McChord Air Force Base is the home of the 62nd Airlift Wing, the 446th Airlift Wing, the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron, and the 361st Recruiting Squadron in addition to a number of other, smaller units. McChord Air Force Base is also home to one of the biggest and most impressive military aircraft museum collections in the world in the form of the McChord Air Museum. McChord Air Force Base was created during the First World War by means of a bond fund-raiser conducted by the citizens of Pierce County. The airstrip was added about ten years later with an additional bond measure, and was officially given to the United States government in the year nineteen thirty eight.

McChord Air Force Base offers its residents easy access to the many things to see and do in the Tacoma and Seattle metropolitan areas, since Tacoma is only one mile away and Seattle is roughly forty miles distant. Notable attractions in the Tacoma and Pierce County areas include the Emerald Downs Race Track, which is well known to horse racing enthusiasts, the Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, and the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, and the Port of Tacoma.
