Spanaway Real Estate Information

Spanaway is one of several unincorporated communities found in the suburban area surrounding the relatively large city of Tacoma. Spanaway is technically considered a census designated place of Washington State, and is situated in the central-western portion of Pierce County. Spanaway has a population of approximately twenty one thousand six hundred residents, and encompasses a total area of slightly less than nine square miles, including about a half square mile of water. Spanaway was originally named Lake Park, but later changed its name to Spanaway after the development company constructed a rail line “span” that was just a short distance “away” from Tacoma. Spanaway was officially incorporated in the year eighteen ninety, about fifty years after the arrival of sheep ranchers.

The nearby Spanaway Lake was originally named Bushalier Lake, whose namesake was a local landowner, but was renamed after the town after Spanaway received its current name. Interestingly enough, two bands have released albums named after this relatively unknown town. Spanaway is a relatively diverse town, at least compared to the surrounding cities and suburban areas. Some famous residents of Spanaway include professional baseball player Mike Blowers, UFC fighter Rick Story, and a number of other individuals with professions including NASCAR drivers, musicians, and even comedians. Educational opportunities in the area are offered by public and private institutions including Franklin Pierce High School, Spanaway Junior High School, and Spanaway Elementary School.

Spanaway is home to a number of historically and culturally significant areas, and even more interesting sites are situated in the remainder of Pierce County and Puget Sound. Spanaway has the Spanaway Historical Society and the Harold E Le May Museum, while the majestic Mount Rainier, the largest mountain and volcano in the region, towers in the distance. Recreational offerings in and around Spanaway include Brookdale Golf Course, the Classic Golf Club, Larchmont Playground, Spanaway Park, and Lake Spanaway Golf Course. Spanaway's location also allows residents of the area to enjoy the many urban attractions of Tacoma and Seattle, including professional sports games, world class dining, shopping malls, boutiques, and night clubs.
