University Place is a medium sized city situated in the northwestern portion of Pierce County, which is in turn located in the central western part of Washington State. University Place has a population of approximately twenty nine thousand nine hundred residents, and encompasses a total area of eight and a half square miles. University Place is a relatively affluent community, ranking in the upper twenty percent of areas ordered by per capita income. University Place was given its current name when the University of Puget Sound was situated in the general area during the nineteenth century. Despite its origin in the educational field, University Place is now known primarily for commerce, business, and residential areas. University Place is noted for its relatively low rates of crime, as well as its highly rated Chambers Bay golf course.
The educational needs of University Place are offered by a number of public and private schools, including Curtis Senior High School, Charles Wright Academy, Curtis Junior High, Drum Intermediate, Narrows View Intermediate, Chambers Primary, Evergreen Primary, Sunset Primary, and University Place Primary Schools. Some notable residents of University Place throughout the years include comic artist Gary Larson of the Far Side, football star and war hero Pat Tillman, and author John Nance. University Place offers the relatively stable, pleasant, and cool weather of the Pacific Northwest, as well as stunning views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier in some parts of town.
The land which is now considered University Place was first settled, explored, and inhabited by Native Americans, primarily of the Puyallup Tribe, at some point during the fourth millennium BC. Non-Native Americans first discovered and mapped the region during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with heavy settlement beginning towards the second half of the eighteen hundreds. University Place maintains a considerable array of recreational facilities, and is located near a number of others. Some local attractions include the Meadow Park Golf Course, the Chambers Bay Golf Club, the University Place Senior Community Centers, the Curtis Pool, Fort Steilacoom Park, Titlow Park, and even bowling alleys.
